Then and Now – Circular Road

In my earlier post, I showed a 1960’s photo by Geoffrey Pain asking readers to identify the street. Reader Clement correctly pointed out that it was the junction of North Canal Road and Circular Road.
Below is a ‘second shot’ of the same place taken from Google’s Street View.

Looking at the second photo, the corner shop looks like a coffee shop. But what was it before? On closer examination of the sign board in photo no. 1, I realized that it was actually an electrical appliance shop. The exact words in Chinese and English were:

- 裕 成 电 器 公 司 - read from right to left; and is in 繁体 (complex form)
- Joo Seng Electric Co.

By the way, can you identify the model of the car in the photo?

The car looks like a Jaguar 3.4 Mk2 from around 1963. To the left, coming into the picture is a mini of some kind but can't make out the badge as to whether it is a Morris or Austin, definitely not an MG mini.

The electrical shop belongs to my maternal grandfather. I have written a blog post here: http://lifebesiderunning.blogspot.com/2011/01/my-unclesphoto-shop.html

North Canal Rd and Circuit Rd used to be a Teochew enclave and the shops in the former were mostly dealing with dried seafood while those in the latter were mostly textile wholesalers.

电 in 繁体 (Traditional form) is 電, isn't it?
