The first picture shows the corner building between Circular Road and North Canal Road, an Irish pub is now occupying the building.
The tower-like building is just the other end of this row of shophouses at the junction of Lorong Telok and Circular Road and I think it belongs to the first commercial brewery in Singapore, Archipelago Brewery Company.
There was a coffee shop under that tower. It was almost triangular in shape. Used to have a place there selling freshly made heh piah... long queues during lunch time always..
These coffee shop is really very refreshing in all these it can be almost in the triangular shape it can be derives so many things which is great.
Either my quizes are still too simple; or the readers of my blog are old timers who really know the old Spore. Anyway, Clement. Can you pls tell us how you recognized this place. Was it by looking at the old street scene, or you could recognize the present view of Circular Rd?
Hi Chun See,
I used to park there almost every afternoon to trade at the broking house in OCBC from the mid 80's and it was the quaint odd corner shop that I remembered most.
BTW must say that your blog really brings back old memories.........keep up the good work and from a fellow ACSian......The Best Is Yet To Be!
Concerning that building at the end of the street (Circular Road), I checked Google Maps Street View and found that the words on the side of the building says, Archipelago Brewery and the Chinese words says Chung Ta (中大 ) or maybe Ta Chung - in the old days, the Chinese words were often read for right to left.
The photo of the "Tiger Oil" ad hoarding in the 1970s above that shophouse at Carpenter Street is nostalgic. Thanks for the memories.
Chun See, great idea to let the fingers do the walking on Google map on this blog.
Cheers!
James. Why do you say the Tiger Oil ad is at Carpenter Street in 1970's? Are you referring to another ad?
The photo shown here (top photo) is the junction of North Canal Rd and Circular Rd as pointed out by Clement; and it's from the 60's.
Hi Chun See. Thanks for the clarification. Clement is correct that the old building was at Circular Road with the 'Tiger Oil' ad, not Carpenter St. Wonder if the same building was around in the 1970s though. Sorry for mixed up.
Would anyone know if this Tiger Oil is related to the Tiger Balm that we still use today?
I use to rub Tiger Balm on My forhead to relief a hangover, and it did work. Tiger oil never used it but they say its good for your muscles and joints.Chun See I think I will try it to see if it will relief or help the aches and pains I get know and then.
Wonderful memories, Tom.
Tiger Oil was changed to Tiger Balm because this product was puzzling and confusing after another Tiger brand was launched to the market in Singapore in the 1960s and earlier.
Brewed since 1932, Tiger Beer has since gained international acclaim for quality and excellence with over 40 international awards and accolades. The current slogan, "Born in the East, Winning the world over".
No, Tiger Beer never ever changed its brand for almost 70 years.
It was Esso's ad slogan "Put a Tiger in your tank". Tiger medicated oil was forced to be changed from "Tiger Oil" to "Tiger Balm". So which was which, medicated oil or petroleum? See the picture? Funny isn't it?
Cheers!
Thimbuktu the last time I heard that Esso'S Advert slogan " put a Tiger in your tank " Was on T.V.years a go. So Tiger Oil and Tiger Balm is just the same Medicated Oil.Thimbuktu I do see the picture, and the funny side , I Hope I did not put Petroleum oil on my forehead After I had few Tiger beers when I was in Singapore with the Highlanders HaHa.Thanks for the memories, take care mate.
