But not too much

My blogger friend Thimbuktu’s latest post about the advertising tag lines reminds me of one very cute TV advertisement from several years ago. It was on the Ribena drink.

If my memory serves me right, it was about this cute little girl who was asked to share her packet of Ribena with a boy. Whilst she was generous enough to hand over her packet to the boy, she reminded him not to finish the whole packet by saying … But not too much.

Yesterday, the Prime Minister spoke about the issue of integrating new citizens. Like MM Lee who spoke about the same issue at the Tanjong Pagar National Day dinner on 13 Aug, he wants Singaporeans to welcome them.

I think Singaporeans generally are like the generous Ribena girl. They say; “Sure you are welcome to share some of our goodies …… but not too much”.

Interesting perspective on the psyche of the population. I still remember that advertisement very distinctly because it tries to do two things at the same time. First is that Ribena is so good that others will want it. Second is that Ribena is so good that though you share it with others, you wouldn't want to give them everything.

I think that girl acted very well. The anxious look on her face when she handed over her drink, and the way she said "But not too much" was so sweet. Wonder if she is now one of our famous actresses.

The ribena girl is very intelligent. She knows that this boy is capable of giving back more ribena in return, that is in the future, but she in the meantime she must make doubly sure that her 'investment' does not misfire.

Nice. Sweet and sharp...really profound. No need to say too much, but it conveys the true spirit of sharing becos the poor girl will be left with nothing, no Ribena if the whole packet is taken away : )

Another suggestive and creative ad slogan from Ribena! I didn't remember that. Thanks.

Sometime back, they were looking for that Ribena girl. It was in the papers. But I don't know if they found her...

Girl: 利賓納。我妈妈说喝了对我很好。
Boy: 给点儿我喝好吗?
Girl: 好,给你一点 ...

You mentioned that it was "several years" ago, so i'm not sure if there was a remake, but there was definitely an earlier classic version about 30 yrs ago, back when I was a kiddie fixated on tv advertisements. The script was almost exactly as written by miss loi, without the classy use of '您' and '点儿'. And the girl poured from a plastic water bottle, the type that kids used to bring to school with the bottle cap/cover doubling as a cup. tetra-paks were not that common back then...
