Yangqin (杨琴) for sale

I have a second-hand Yangqin (杨琴) for sale. It belongs to my daughter who used to play for her school’s Chinese Orchestra. If you know of anyone who might be interested, please do let me know. Thanks.

The Yangqin comes with:

1) 1 set of Yangqin 'zhu' 柱 ('playing sticks')

2) Yanqin stand

3) Yangqin strings tuner

4) Cloth cover

5) Leather case

6) Music stand

7) Music tuner

8) Rust-removal liquid for yangqin strings

9) 1 book of musical scores for yangqin

Asking price: $600. We paid $1,000 for it a few years ago.

For those who do not know what is a Yangqin, it’s called a dulcimer in English. You can read more about this Chinese classical instrument here.

***********************************************

Here’s an interesting bit of biblical history where the dulcimer is mentioned.

1. Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof six cubits: he set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon.
2. Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the princes, the governors, and the captains, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellers, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.
3. Then the princes, the governors, and captains, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellers, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, were gathered together unto the dedication of the image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up; and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up.
4. Then an herald cried aloud, To you it is commanded, O people, nations, and languages,
5. That at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king hath set up:
6. And whoso falleth not down and worshippeth shall the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace.

Chun See, may I suggest you sign up for an Ebay.sg account and put this item up for on-line auction. I tried it many times before (previously on yahoo.com.sg which is now defunct and also a few times on Ebay). It is a cheap and effective way to sell unwanted items which may still be of use to other people. If you need help doing it, please let me know.

Thanks PY, Victor. I have always wanted to sign up for ebay but it looked very complicated especially the bidding and paypal etc. Must call you one of these days and get some tips hands-on.

Chun See - No need to sign up for Paypal but I think you must provide your credit card number when you register on Ebay. This is a one-time process and is for Ebay to charge you a small listing fee each time you auction something. I think the fee is about 5-10 cents per/listing and/or photo. (So far, I have not been billed by Ebay. Maybe they are waiting for the charges to accumulate to a higher figure first before they do.)

You can ask owner to self-collect. He/she will then pay you cash on the spot. Or you could provide delivery (you can charge a small delivery charge) and then collect cash on delivery. If you want, you can specify your handphone number in the listing but be prepared to get some crank calls. If not, you will get to see questions from interested parties via your email account and you can reply them via Ebay.

Better to accept only cash when you sell and pay cash only you buy and after you've checked the goods and satisfied with its condition.

Ask your children lah. They will probably be able to guide you along.

Hi Lam CS,

Nice way to post about an item you are putting up for sale and write about its origin. Not just the entreprenial aspect but also the historical part too. People will learn something about your item.

Usually, it is much easier for COD (Cash On Delivery) if you can spare the time for delivery locally within SGP. Otherwise, just state the terms as C&C (Cash & Carry). State a "Buy Now" price i.e. the price you are selling. In this way there is no bidding. Hver you may wish to allow prospective buyers to state their counter-offers. If agreeable, seal the sale, arrange for a mutually convenient date/time to meet up with the buyer. He inspets the item, pay cash and cart away the item. It's easier this way without having to go thru paypal.

Wish you success in your sale.

If there is little prospect to secure interested parties in eBay, another alternative is to sell it back to the schools's Chinese Orchestra who may have students that need one. Or you can ask the CCA teacher to have parents who intend to get one to contact you.

Thanks everyone. Incidentally, I wonder how many readers, esp. the younger ones, know that Nebuchednezzar was responsible for one to the 7 wonders of the ancient world.

Chun See
I am looking for one of these and would be interested in purchasing it depending on the shipping costs to the U.S. My zip code is 47408. Would you be interested in shipping the item?
Thank you
Jeremy

Hi Chrimsun. I don't think I want to go through the hassle of shipping it all the way to the states. Thank you for your interest.
