Old Beauties Quiz (2)

Below are another 2 ‘old beauties’ that you won’t be able to find on Singapore roads. Let’s see if you can identify them.

Please note: these are two different cars. But since they look rather similar, I better number them. Actually, it's purely by chance that I picked two cars that looked so similar in shape, size and colour. Maybe Ipoh drivers like this colour. So please specify the model and not just the make ok?

Car No. 1

Car No. 2

ANSWERS (22 Apr 2008)

Full marks to Peter. Car No. 1 is Honda Accord. Car No. 2 is Opel Kadett 1200S. Below are two more photos taken from another angle.

I don't know much about the Opel Kadett. But that model of Honda Accord was very popular in early 80's. It's successor arrived around 1986. Two of my colleagues in NPB bought it and were target of much envy.

Peugeot and a honda?

I guess the first Ford Cortina and second one a Honda.

Chun See - think it's the Wordpress problem. Should be ok now for my blog. Let me know if you still face the same problem again. Thanks.

Car No 1 is not Ford Cortina or Peugeot. Car No. 2 is not Honda. I guess Laokokok is not 'lao' (old)enough; and iml is still a 'kid on the blog' here at GMY. Haha.

John, Tom, Brian, Peter, Victor, Zen where are you?

Car #1 is the first type of Honda Accords (1978 model) that was designed to rival BMW 3 series.

Singapore version in that year was 1608cc, later models were launched with 1598cc. Since this is Malaysian model and assembled in Malaysia, should be the 1608cc version.

Car #2 I suspect is Opel model bcos photo too small to see.

One thing for sure Chun See, I'm at least 10yrs your junior haha.

The first car has double round headlights and very straight bonnet, makes it more like Ford Cortina but probably missed out the plastic bumper. So maybe it's a Japanese made car.

The second one very difficult. Side mirror looked like Honda but the type of back sharp shape and metal bumper, looked like Continental car.

Give up.

Car #2 = Opel Kadet?

I am quite sure that car #1 is a Honda Accord (circa 1980) because I drove one belonging to my friend's brother not long after I passed my driving in 1983. However, I do not have the faintest idea about the 2nd car though.

Car #1 was 1st generation Accord. After i bought generation #2 accord, i got one long scratched line running from left frontheadlight to rear lights. Cost of respray job was $100.

After respray, same problem. One night I stood next to my apartment window and never sleep. Guess who I caught? My neighbour who was on the same management council of our condominium like me. That fella was a Singpore Polytechnic lecturer in the School of IT who really either "Boh Tai Chi Chor" or "Boh Song" with me. To cut a long story short, he subequently resigned from the management council.

It is really difficult to spot the brands of Japanese cars featured that many years back. The cut of them was quite similar. My ex-boss who once drove an Opel kadatt and used to park his blue colour car near our passenger terminal. Years later he became our departmental head, and during a conversation I mentioned his Opel car. He was taken aback, and asked how I could remember the brand of the car he was driving so long ago. Well from a distance the car did look like a Japanese car, but on closer look it had certain features that were different from a Japanese make.

I'm quite eh.. lost here. Cause I don't even know the recent car models, let alone back in the 1980s heeeheee.. but cool cars!

We can't find them in sg anymore?

Sometimes in the seventies, we received and warehoused the first batch of secondhand Toyota Corolla which were originally used in Japan by learners driving schools. The cars were in tip-top condition and local buyers were practically queueing up for them, really value for money. After the arrival of several batches, the supplier must have depleted their stock and we heard no more of these cars.

The 1st car is a 1st generation Honda Accord 4 door saloon(SJ/SM series),very early model as it got smooth rear lamp lens but provided owner never replaced it with later ribbed rear lamp lens, launched in 1977 after 3 door hatchback debut in 1976.It got 1.6 or 1.8 engine.

The second one could be a Opel Kadett or Isuzu Gemini 4 door saloon.GM owned part of Isuzu in early 1970s & Isuzu made the Gemini in Japan, but with Isuzu's engines & interior furnishings. The Gemini was to replace the Bellett. When it was launched,it was known as Bellett Gemini but half way through,it was named as Gemini. There was 2 door coupe body,The Gemini got 1.6,1.8 & 1.8 diesel engine. There was even a 1.8 DOHC known as Gemini 1.8ZZ-R.
