This day in history

Sorry, quite busy these days and no time to blog. So I do a quickie and announce that at on this day, 58 years ago this guy was born in a village that is today right smack on the Central Expressway. Here is a photo of him in a setting you will never ever see in Singapore again.

Well technically, I was born in Kardang Kerbau; but ……

Also like to announce that my fellow blogger, Icemoon and I and jointly making a presentation at the When Nations Remember Summit at the Carlton Hotel on 12 October 2010. This event is organized by the National Library Board. Our presentation is at 10 am in the morning and in afternoon we will be running a ‘Close-up Group Session’ where participants can go into details of what we do in our blogs.

Do sign up and participate in this afternoon workshop session where you can help us to share with participants what you are doing to help preserve the memories of Singapore. And do invite your friends to join us as well. Once again, the event is:

WHEN NATIONS REMEMBER
Date: 11-12 October 2010
Venue: Carlton Hotel, Singapore

Further details can be found at the Yesterday.sg and When Nations Remember websites.

Wah, I'd love to go, even willing to pay for the conference fees, but I can't take leave then. Have a good time at the conference, and all the best for your session!

Unk Dicko. Don't forget to bring your ukelele. I am sure you can contribute many ideas on how to harness blogs as an avenue to add to the nation's collective memory.

every good wish for your birthday, 2 more years to a very big one of course and I agree that is a wonderful photograph

Icemoon is correct. At first I was wondering why james (my youngest brother) was not there, forgetting the fact that he was not borned yet. It happened that my aunt (from kuantan) came to visit us and my mum wished to commemorate the occasion by having a photo taken, having the opportunity to show off her chubby baby at the same time. The photographer could be my 10th uncle who was staying with us before he got married.

Hi ChunSee,

Happy Birthday to you.

Its a very nice photo. The tall coconut tress in the background makes one go '..ahhhh'.

You will noticed that most of our outdoor photos of those days had lots of coconut trees in the background. If you read my brother's article about our grandma, you will understand why.

Zen. Is that dog in the background Ah Wong?

Happy Birthday Chun See! I have been away for a while – so have missed out on GMY for several weeks. Now I am trying to re-live the lost weeks. What a chubby boy you were! And your dog is called “Ah Wong”? Wonder how he got that surname …

Zen said...

Chun See - I think the dog could be 'ah wong' because because it stayed with us the longest. However, by just looking at the photo, it could be misleading, because the dog appeared rather dark in colour or could the dog took cover from the sun? Our dogs were all strays which decided to take shelter under of raised house and made it their home. Acording to our grandma when stray dogs came to our home, they would bring in wealth and the opposite was true for cats, but we were not really rich with all those strays dogs coming to our place.

Edward - We named the said dog 'ah wong' because he had a yellow coat of fur and in cantonese 'wong' means yellow colour.

Chun See, Hope it's not too late to wish you Happy birthday. Sorry for being a few day's late, but catching up with jet-lag upon return to Luxembourg. You are so lucky to have this photo! esp. when you looked even cuter than you were in BRS.

Belated birthday Chun See! That picture is certainly worth a thousand words, or maybe a couple of thousand dollars too! Hope you have a good speaking session at NLB helping to encourage more people to jolt their memories - and their minds - awake.

Thanks for clarifying Zen. Somehow I had the feeling that Ah Wong was Cantonese.
Chun See, Year of 52 … that is a good vintage. It’s the year of the Dragon. Here’s to many happy years ahead!

Chun See, Happy Birthday and many returns of the day. From your 3 photos I noticed the your features do not change much from baby, youth and now.

A belated Happy Birthday to you Lam Chun See & many many more to come. I had a lump in my throat with your phrase about never seeing a kampong setting like this ever again in S'pore. So true and sad. I still have fond memories of relatives & friends who lived in kampongs in Bedok & Changi.
It always touches me when people remember their pets.
Good luck with your joint Summit.

Happy belated birthday, Chun See.

Aiyah, why your talk must be on a weekday when most people have to work? I believe many like myself would like to attend but cannot take leave to do so.
