Roundabout Quiz 4

There are very few roundabouts on Singapore’s major roads nowadays. Most of them have been converted to traffic-lights controlled junctions; some with flyovers and underpasses. Besides the famous Newton Circus, I can only think of 3 offhand. There are 2 below the Tuas and Pioneer flyovers and one at West Coast Road called Buroh Circus. The rest are mostly small roundabouts in residential areas such as the ones at Hillview and Seranggoon Gardens which I have blogged about previously here.

Over the past few months, whilst driving around Singapore, I came across four more. Let’s see if any of you can identify all of them.

No. 1 should be easy. It is a very old roundabout and located at a very busy place where most Singaporeans would have visited one time or another.

No. 2 and No. 3 are small roundabouts located in residential areas.

No. 4 is interesting. It is very new. Previously this place was a cross road junction. Apparently there had been some near-accidents and so it was converted into a roundabout just a few months ago.

Hey. I thot No. 1 should be easy. Maye the angle/view in this photo is misleading. Anyway, it is not Picadilly Circus.

Yes No. 3 is Queen Astrid Park and No. 4 is NTU.

I thought 1 looks like the circus at North Buona Vista/Portsdown Road.

no.1 is the roundabout at SGH right. haha. nice blog btw

Damien is right. No. 1 is at SGH, Spore Gen Hospital. Actually there are 2 roundabouts within the hospital ground. This one is called Central Circus and is near to Eu Tong Sen St entrance. There's another one at College Road near Jln Bt Merah entrance. I didn't take a picture that day becos lazy to walk so far. Maybe another time.

Ah yes, I have forgotten about the one at Portsdown Rd.

So nobody knows the ans. to No. 2?

Give you a hint. Surely YG will know becos he blogged about a building just next to it recently.

If I am not wrong there is only 1 semi circle circus in Singapore. Have you seen Nepal Circus at Portsdown Road lately?

chun see, if it is jalan rumbia (where the imperial oberoi was), i have not been to that place for a long time.

Alamak YG. How can you not recognize this place. It is not a roundabout from yesteryears. I took this photo a few weeks ago and it is right next to the building that you asked us to name in one of your recent quizzes.

Could it be Gilstead Road?

Hey, there's one big one just before Parkway Parade!

Lam Chun See said...

Icemoon is right. It's at Gilstead Road; just next to the Life BP Church and the Beulah House that is being constructed. I said YG should know becos he blogged about these 2 buildings here.

And thanks to SiNz for updating my 'database' of remaining roundabouts in Spore. The one in Marine Parade is another of the few larger ones remaining. I didn't think about it as the eastern part of Spore isn't exactly my territory.

The one at Marine Parade is nostalgic, 'cos there was where Mandalay Villa used to be.

Anonymous said...

The exact spot of Mandalay Villas should be the road between the new Seaview condo and the motel. Amber Road ran from junction at Mountbatten Road turning right past the motel, going past the Chinese Swimming Club. The roundabout is on reclaimed land, the old coastline being the land behind the drain and the new condo..

I mean the main entrance to Mandalay Villas should be the road between the condo and the motel. In fact the old road into Seaview Hotel was the driveway into the Mandalay Villas.

Is weng ngai your son? just curious cause both of you look alike and share the same surname.

Lam Chun See said...

Yes he is.

>both of you look alike...

It is what the Cantonese calls 餅印 or "biscuit mould" from the same factory.

what has happened to your most recent comments? on my screen, the latest happened to be dec 04.

Lam Chun See said...

Oh yeah. I don't know what happened to the 'recent comments'. Maybe it has something to do with the failure of the PC's clock battery a few days ago. I have since replaced it.

Lam Chun See said...

Laokokok has put up a photo of a roundabout at his blog Images of Spore. Can you identify this roundabout?

Victor said...

Chun See, I think the reason why your "recent comments" froze on 4 Dec 2008 has nothing to do with the failure of your PC clock battery. Try reloading the "recent comments" widget which I sent to you some time ago. I have forwarded that mail to you again.

Lam Chun See said...

I tried reloading but it did not work. Anyway, holidaying now.
